Carolyn Davidson needed funds to take oil painting classes in college and took on the Nike logo design project at a rate of $2 an hour. In the end, she handed the design over for $35 in 1969 to the founder of Nike who launched the brand with the swoosh design.
Many years later after the company went public, the founder of Nike gave Carolyn 500 shares which she has held onto ever since. Nike stock has been split four times since then so her 500 shares are now 8,000 and they're now worth around $1,000,000.
