Smoking vs Vaping - What are your thoughts?

Smoking and vaping are two distinct methods of consuming nicotine or other substances. While both involve inhaling a substance into the lungs, there are significant differences between the two in terms of health effects, safety, and potential risks.

1. Health Effects:

Smoking: Smoking tobacco involves burning it, which releases numerous harmful chemicals, including tar, carbon monoxide, and various carcinogens. These substances can lead to serious health issues such as lung cancer, heart disease, respiratory problems, and a range of other ailments. The World Health Organization estimates that smoking causes over 8 million deaths annually worldwide.

Vaping: Vaping, on the other hand, involves heating a liquid (e-liquid) that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other additives. While vaping is generally considered less harmful than smoking, it is not entirely risk-free. The long-term health effects of vaping are still being studied, and some studies have identified potential risks, such as lung damage, respiratory issues, and an increased susceptibility to infections. However, these risks are generally thought to be significantly lower than those associated with smoking.

2. Safety:

Smoking: Smoking poses numerous safety hazards, primarily due to the combustion process involved. Cigarette butts can cause fires, and careless handling of lit cigarettes can lead to burns or accidental fires. Moreover, secondhand smoke poses a significant risk to others, as it contains harmful substances that non-smokers can inhale, increasing their chances of developing health problems.

Vaping: Vaping is generally considered safer than smoking in terms of fire hazards and secondhand exposure. Since vaping devices do not involve combustion, there is no risk of accidental fires caused by cigarettes or ashes. Additionally, while secondhand vapor does contain some potentially harmful substances, the levels are typically much lower than those found in secondhand smoke.

3. Addiction and Cessation:

Smoking: Smoking is highly addictive due to the presence of nicotine in tobacco. Nicotine dependence makes quitting smoking a challenging task for many individuals. Traditional methods of smoking cessation, such as nicotine replacement therapy or prescription medications, are often used to help smokers quit.

Vaping: Vaping can also be addictive due to the presence of nicotine in e-liquids. However, vaping offers an advantage in terms of smoking cessation. Some studies suggest that e-cigarettes can be effective tools for quitting smoking, as they provide a similar experience to smoking while allowing users to gradually reduce their nicotine intake. However, it is important to note that vaping should not be considered a risk-free method for quitting smoking, and more research is needed to fully understand its effectiveness.

In conclusion, smoking is widely recognized as a major health hazard, causing numerous diseases and premature deaths. Vaping, while not without potential risks, is generally considered a less harmful alternative. However, it is crucial to remember that the best option for overall health is to avoid both smoking and vaping altogether. If you are a smoker looking to quit, it is advisable to consult healthcare professionals who can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs.

I'm not sure how the nicotine measurements would work with vaping and I'd like to know how much vaping nicotine gets to the blood stream?

There's no question that e-cigarettes are better than smoking. That's not really in debate, as you're not getting anywhere near the crap you'd get smoking (which is basically burning plant matter and all kinds of stuff). The problem is that the evidence for e-cigarettes just isn't out there. E-cigarette advocates will swear blind it is, but it's not. The other problem is that there isn't as much regulation as there should be with regard to E-cigarettes: concentrations vary wildly between products and there have been serious injuries caused by the DIY kits. So, end story: the best option is not to smoke. E-cigarette manufacturers are strictly not promoting their devices as a way to give up smoking (because they can't, it would mean that it's a medical product and would be under stricter regulation), so if you want to keep smoking... well, do what you will. The worst option is heavy smoking. E-cigarettes are somewhere in the middle.

Nicotine is still toxic and alters your long term brain chemistry. But at least it doesn't cause lung cancer, emphysema, etc.

At the end of the day you don't stop at a little chef when's there's a mcdonalds 2 mins away do ya so why would you settle for vaping over smoking it's just not the same . 1)Cigarettes always were disposable items you lose your vape gonna cost ya. You lose a cigarette spark another one up mate! 2) there's no incentive to switch to them on a night out because pubs still just stick you outside with the smokers 3) the lug on a cigarette is much more satisfying and goes way better with a beer 4) and my favourite one. There is practically no long term significant research into the harms of vaping. And plus you see these self important vapers in the street blowing a mushroom cloud the size of hiromishima on those expensive vapes at everyone with the look 'aren't I so much better than you pathetic smokers it's safe because the government say so I'm just gonna inhale the output of an industrial chimney every time on every breath with cancer causing vanilla flavour' . I don't know what the exact consequences they will find with vape but it will be worse than cigarettes basic physics. What goes up must come down and if it can go wrong it will go wrong.

Starting vaping when you don't smoke is stupid. Vaping to quit smoking is acceptable. Vaping once or two every month because stress make you want to smoke again is acceptable. That's why I started and still vape from time to time.
