In 1961 in Philadelphia, a woman gives birth in a department store. The baby has fractured his legs and arms in the womb. Years later, David takes a train back to Philadelphia after a job interview. A woman sits next to him, but he hides his ring. As they chat, he tries to flirt but she rejects him. Suddenly, the train derails in an accident. David is miraculously the only survivor, unscathed. At home, he learns he didn't get the job, realizing his family's strained relationships. He receives a mysterious card asking about his health, prompting him to reflect on his life.
