"Laway sa Kutsara" is a Tagalog horror animation based on a true story about a family cursed by kulam (witchcraft) through a simple, everyday object—a spoon. The story follows Marites, who attends a family gathering where an estranged relative, rumored to be a mangkukulam (witch), is present. During the meal, the relative hands Marites a spoon, and without thinking, she uses it to eat. Soon after, strange things begin happening to Marites—she falls mysteriously ill, experiences horrifying nightmares, and feels an unseen presence following her.
As her condition worsens, Marites’ family consults various doctors, but none can explain her illness. Desperate, they turn to a local albularyo (healer), who reveals that Marites has been cursed through the spoon—laway sa kutsara (saliva on the spoon) is a common method used by witches to cast a spell. The curse is designed to weaken her and eventually take her life unless it's broken.
The albularyo explains that the curse can only be lifted by returning to the source—the estranged relative—and confronting the witch. In a tense and frightening confrontation, Marites and her family must break the curse before it claims her life, using a mix of traditional rituals and spiritual protection.
"Laway sa Kutsara" explores themes of jealousy, betrayal, and the power of kulam, showing how everyday objects can be used for dark purposes in Filipino folklore. The animation highlights the terrifying consequences of crossing paths with someone skilled in the dark arts, and the lengths a family will go to protect one of their own.
